Type 2 diabetics are at lower risk of hospital admission or death from a myocardial infarction than patients with established coronary heart disease.
Results in a cross sectional study by clinicians at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, challenge the widely held view that patients with diabetes have as high a risk of cardiovascular events and death as non-diabetic patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction.
Researchers carried out two studies involving more than 4,600 patients with type 2 diabetes and more than 8,700 patients with established coronary heart disease.
The increased risk of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes is well recognized, the researchers note, and is associated with both diabetes specific risk factors and increased frequency of conventional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. A recent study suggested that the risk of death from coronary heart disease in type 2 diabetics may even be as high as in patients who have had a myocardial infarction.
