Drug Reactions Replace Viral Infection as Primary Cause of Acute Liver Failure

In a prospective study of patients at 17 tertiary care centers, acetaminophen overdose was the most common cause of acute liver failure, the US Acute Liver Failure Study Group reports in the Annals of Internal Medicine for December 17.

 Coma grade at admission and apparent cause were the only factors associated with outcome; patient age and symptom duration were not related to outcome. Dr. William M. Lee of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and coauthors therefore advise that patients with acute liver failure be transferred to a transplantation facility before coma advances to an advanced grade.
