Model Suggests Genetic Instability Mutation Initiates Colon Cancer

Chromosomal instability is likely to be an early event in the process of colorectal tumorigenesis, preceding the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, according to a mathematical model developed by investigators in the US and Britain.

The earliest event so far identified in the genesis of sporadic colorectal tumors is mutation of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene, Dr. Martin A. Nowak, of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, New Jersey, and colleagues note in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences early online edition. APC is one of many tumor suppressor genes.
