H. pylori and IL-1 Genotyping May Predict Gastric Cancer Risk

Combined bacterial/host genotyping appears to be useful in determining the risk of gastric carcinoma in patients with chronic gastritis, according to a report published in the November 20th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. In fact, with certain combinations, a nearly 90-fold increase in risk is observed.

Dr. Ceu Figueiredo, from Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidad do Porto in Portugal, and colleagues performed bacterial/host genotyping in 221 subjects with chronic gastritis and 222 patients with gastric carcinoma. Specifically, the researchers tested for mutations in Helicobacter pylori genes and in two host genes–interleukin (IL)-1B and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN).
