Patient-Controlled Sedation for Colonoscopy Safe, Effective

Patient-controlled sedation (PCS) during colonoscopy was as effective and significantly safer than standard intravenous sedation determined by the endoscopist, according to the results of a randomized trial published in the November issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

 “PCS with propofol and alfentanil has been suggested as an alternative method for sedation of patients during colonoscopy,” write Danny W. Lee, MBChB, and colleagues from North District Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, China. “It allows the patient to control the dose of medication(s) according to his/her level of consciousness and thereby overdosing is avoided.”
