New Recommendations Discussed for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

New recommendations for the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) published in a supplement to the November issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology were presented here at the 67th annual scientific meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).

Developed by the ACG Functional GI Disorders Task Force, the evidence-based recommendations provide the first analysis of the vast and often methodologically weak or conflicting literature on the diagnosis and treatment of IBS. According to task force member Kevin W. Olden, MD, FACG, from the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, the impetus for developing the ACG recommendations stemmed from the “vast increase in research conducted over the last 5 to 10 years that has radically altered our perception of what constitutes this disorder and how it should be effectively evaluated and treated.

The adoption of a clearer working definition of IBS (the Rome criteria) and pharmaceutical developments also prompted the ACG’s efforts.
