Paroxetine Reduces IBS Symptoms in Patients Not Responsive to Fiber Alone

Paroxetine afforded substantial benefit to patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The benefit, which is thought to be independent of the antidepressant activity was described in a study presented here Monday at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) 67th Annual Scientific Meeting.

“The medical literature on IBS is filled with opinions, but little carefully collected or analyzed data,” George Arnold, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in Pennsylvania, said. “Much of the available data conflicts with my experience in successfully treating IBS patients with a high-fiber diet alone.

Many people with IBS are disabled by pain and changes in bowel habits that profoundly affect their quality of life.” The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 110 symptomatic (by Rome criteria) IBS patients who were divided into two groups based on baseline fiber intake. The 98 patients of Group A had low-fiber intake (<25 g/d). They were placed on a high-fiber diet for 5 weeks. Twenty-five percent were successfully treated and requested no futher intervention.
