Obesity-Related Steatohepatitis May Present As Rapidly Progressing Illness

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in obese women may progress to cirrhosis before it is recognized, thereafter progressing to subacute liver failure, clinicians at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville report.

 Dr. Stephen H. Caldwell and Elizabeth E. Hespenheide recognized among patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in their own practice 2% to 3% who were obese and presented with fulminant disease in the absence of any such previous history. Except for nefazodone and prednisone, there was no significant history of other medication or herbal remedy use.
