Study Links Acid Reflux and Obesity to Newly Developed Asthma

Gastroesophageal reflux and obesity both appear to be independent risk factors for newly developed asthma, a major study from Sweden claims.

 The study involved more than 13,200 patients who responded to questionnaires 10 years apart. It was found that those patients who reported they suffered from acid reflux were more than twice as likely to develop asthma (OR = 2.1 95 percent CI) as adults than those without GERD.

Those who were obese at the start of the study were also more likely to have asthma at that time, and were more likely to develop asthma during the ensuing 10 years.
