Imaging Does Not Diagnose Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Degeneration

Radiological imaging does not disclose any diagnostic differences between non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and non-progressive non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

 The severity of steatosis was the only pathological feature important for confirming the diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis indicated by three kinds of scanning – abdominal ultrasound, computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, researchers report.

 The researchers, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio and the Center for Liver Diseases, Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Virginia, conducted a prospective study to assess the role of the scans in diagnosing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

 They enrolled consecutive patients with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, excluding any with other liver diseases and heavy drinkers (more than 20 grams of alcohol daily).
