Role of Helicobacter Pylori Infection and Other Factors in Gastroduodenal Pathology

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection appears to be an important factor in dyspeptic symptoms among the elderly.

This bacterium is one of the factors, along with smoking and analgesics, said to interfere with gastric mucosa in symptom generation in middle-aged to elderly people, say researchers at the University of Ulm and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. In their population-based sample, the investigators evaluated the role of these factors in 288 subjects aged 50-85 (mean 65) attending a University of Ulm continuing education programme. The 13C-urea breath test was used to confirm H. pylori infection.

 A standardised questionnaire was used to collect factors thought to be involved in symptom generation such as demographic data and gastrointestinal symptoms.
