Twelve Indicted in Tainted Blood Investigation in Italy

– A governmental investigation of HIV and hepatitis infections caused by transfusions of contaminated blood ended on Friday in Trento with the indictment of 12 people including former representatives of the Italian Ministry of Health.

 After more than 6 months of preliminary hearings, judge Giorgio Flaim released 15 people from charges and committed another 12 to trial, including Guelfo Marcucci, of the Marcucci Group (a company involved with blood products), and Duilio Poggiolini, a former Health Ministry pharmaceutical director and member of the National Institute of Health.

 In a 631-page order, the judge dismissed accusations of “intentional epidemic,” but confirmed charges of an “unpremeditated epidemic” and “export of tainted blood products.”
