Two Trials Show Radiofrequency Energy Effective for Fecal Incontinence

Two trials reported Friday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) show that use of radiofrequency energy to create muscle lesions in the anal canal effectively improves fecal continence and quality of life.

One study was conducted by J. E. Efron, MD, of Cleveland Clinic Florida, in Weston and Naples, Florida, and by colleagues there and at other US institutions. The other trial, which was smaller but longer-term, was led by T. Takahashi, MD, and colleagues at Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran, Mexico City, Mexico.

The US study enrolled 43 women and 7 men who had previously failed medical or surgical therapy for fecal incontinence. While patients were under conscious sedation and local anesthesia, an anoscopic device with multiple needles was used to deliver radiofrequency energy to the muscles of the anal canal, thus creasing thermal lesions; a thermocouple controlled the temperatures achieved. Three days of prophylactic antibiotics followed treatment.
