Treating Gastroesophageal Reflux in Asthmatic Children

Asthmatics with concurrent gastroesophageal reflux (GER), regardless of the clinical severity of the condition, should be given antireflux drugs.

Proton pump inhibitors are essential in treating GER, according to a review of studies by researchers in the Clinic of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Allergology at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland. Consideration should be given to the appropriate high dose level and long duration of therapy required and that GER is often a neglected factor in the etiopathogenesis of asthma.

The coincidence of asthma and GER, which has an estimated incidence of 50 to 60 percent in asthmatic children, is well known. It may accompany typical symptoms such as sore throat, thoracic pain, cough or wheezing and can aggravate the course of bronchial obstruction as well as cause it, or trigger obstruction due to other factors.
