As the Bush Administration’s national smallpox vaccination plan began Friday, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson told US mayors that the administration will do more to ensure that federal financing for the plan reaches cities and localities.
Thompson told a meeting of the US Conference of Mayors that his department is auditing how states are spending $1.1. billion in federal money out of concern that not enough of the funds are filtering down to municipalities, which are responsible for enacting much of the plan.
