Results of a study published in the January issue of Thorax suggest that impaired interferon (IFN)-gamma production contributes to susceptibility to Legionella pneumophila infection.
“L. Pneumophila, a Gram negative intracellular pathogen, causes Legionnaire’s disease (LD),” Dr. K. D. Lettinga and colleagues from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, note. “IFN-gamma is important for host defense against L. pneumophila.”
