Systemic corticosteroid-naive elderly women with COPD are significantly more likely to have osteoporosis than are comparable subjects with asthma, Japanese researchers report in the December issue of Chest.
Drs. Hideki Katsura and Kozui Kida of Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Medical Center, note that osteoporosis is “quite common” in women with advanced COPD. However, it is not known whether women with COPD who have never had systemic corticosteroids are at heightened risk for osteoporosis. It is also not known whether the prevalence of osteoporosis differs in COPD and asthma.
