Iceland’s deCODE genetics Inc. reported on Thursday that it has identified several variations within a single gene that confer a significantly increased risk of osteoporosis.
As it conducts its work analyzing the relatively homogenous Icelandic population, deCODE said it identified seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within a gene on chromosome 20 that are associated with a several-fold increase in the risk of osteoporosis.
