Multiple Births on the Rise in the U.S

A new study published in the January issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology highlights the growing trend of multiple births in the U.S.


“Our findings underscore the importance of epidemiologic analyses of key perinatal outcomes over time to inform clinicians of changing risks,” write lead researcher Rebecca B. Russell, MSPH, and colleagues from the Perinatal Data Center of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation in White Plains, N.Y. For years, multiple births accounted for only 2% of births and 11% of infant deaths. But that changed dramatically in the 1990s.
