Hip Protectors Reduce Nursing Home Fractures By 40 Percent

Use of hip protectors among elderly residents in nursing homes reduced the incidence of hip fracture by some 40%, German researchers here have shown. Residents in 49 nursing homes in the Hamburg area were enrolled in a randomised controlled trial with 18 months of follow up, led by Dr Gabriele Meyer and colleagues at the University of Hamburg.

The cohort consisted of 459 elderly residents at 25 homes who wore hip protectors, and 483 residents at another 24 homes who acted as controls, and all at a high risk of falling. Although previous trials of hip protectors in nursing homes have shown a reduction of up to 50% in the incidence of hip fracture, there has been a poor response among the elderly in accepting their use.

The researchers developed a two-part intervention, consisting of structured theory based education among nursing home staff, and provision of free equipment to encourage the use of hip protectors.
