The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis C infection (HCV) is increased when co-infection with HIV is present, new study results indicate. Even when the prevalence of HCV is low, the risk of liver cancer among individuals with AIDS is higher than in the general population.
Dr. Eric A. Engels and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, analyzed data from the AIDS-Cancer Match Registry study, which were drawn from AIDS and cancer registries in 11 areas in the US.
