Decrease in Deaths from Lung Cancer Among British Women

The number of deaths from lung cancer amongst British women under the age of 70 has fallen to the lowest level in 30 years, according to figures compiled from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the General Registrar’s Office (GRO) data for 2001.

This trend follows a similar pattern already seen in men and is due to a reduction in the number of people who smoke. In 1970 around 60% of adults smoked while today this figure has fallen to just 27%. In 1988 there were nearly 6000 deaths from lung cancer in women under the age of 70 compared with 4550 deaths in 2001.

However deaths from lung cancer amongst women aged over 70 remain high, with 8500 women dying from the disease last year compared with 6300 deaths in the age group in 1988.This is consistent with smoking rates amongst women which saw a sharp increase after World War II.
