Spontaneous cure of acute hepatitis C is not infrequent and could justify a period of simple follow-up before any treatment is begun, suggest researchers in France.
A questionnaire mailed to members of the Association Nationale des Gastroenterologues des Hopitaux Generaux identified 62 cases of acute hepatitis C cases in 40 different centres. The 62 study subjects were found to be predominantly female (58 percent) and with a median age of 33 years.
The disease was revealed by symptoms in 65 percent of cases (jaundice in 53 percent) and via screening in 30 percent. Main suspected routes of infection were intravenous drug use in 32 percent, nosocomial exposure in 29 percent and professional accidents in 11 percent
