Caffeine Use, Hypertension and Other Conditions Linked to Chronic Headache Syndromes

Several factors beyond analgesic overuse, some previously unreported, have been linked to chronic daily headaches by researchers in the United States.

Moreover, the correlation is more complex than simple comorbidity, report Dr. M. E. Bigal and colleagues these investigators from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York.

Chronic daily headache (CDH) is one of the more frequently encountered headache syndromes at major tertiary care centres. However, the transformation from episodic to chronic migraine (CM) and the development of new daily persistent headache (NDPH) is poorly understood.

This randomised, case-control study sought to identify somatic and lifestyle factors associated with development of these headache conditions. Patients groups included 399 people with CM with analgesic overuse, 158 with CM without analgesic overuse, and 69 with NDPH. These groups were compared with two control groups: 100 people with episodic migraine and 65 people with chronic posttraumatic headache.
