The bisphosphonate pamidronate is safe and very effective for increasing bone mineral density (BMD) in nonambulatory children with cerebral palsy, according to a randomized, placebo-controlled study of 12 such children. In the study, reported by Dr. Richard C. Henderson of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and colleagues in The Journal of Pediatrics for November, one member of each of the six matched pairs of children received saline placebo while the other received pamidronate.
All medication was administered intravenously daily for 3 consecutive days. The dosing interval was repeated every three months for one year and follow-up evaluations continued for 6 months beyond the treatment period.
