“Triple modality therapy” – short-term hormone ablation followed by external beam radiation and then by brachytherapy – is a highly effective treatment for locally advanced prostate cancer, according to researchers.
Howard Sandler, MD, and colleagues affiliated with Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, reported these findings on December 9th to physicians attending the annual meeting of the North American Radiological Society .
Their reported experience encompasses 38 cases treated between 1995 and 1998, all with any two of three risk factors: Gleason score greater than 6, initial PSA greater than 10, or stage T2b to T3a. Such patients are at high risk for biochemical relapse following conventional monotherapy.
