For a subgroup of patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), dual chamber pacing results in higher mortality and more hospitalizations for heart failure than does simple ventricular backup pacemaker therapy.
These are the findings of the Dual Chamber and VVI Implantable Defibrillator (DAVID) trial, due to be published December 25th in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “It turns out that right ventricular pacing may actually cause the condition being treated by defibrillation,” Dr. Bruce L. Wilkoff, chairman of the DAVID steering committee, said in a press teleconference.
