Immunosuppressive therapy with prednisone significantly reduces clinical events and restenosis after stent implantation in patients with persistently high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), Italian researchers report.
Dr. Francesco Versaci from the Universita Tor Vergata, Rome, and colleagues with the Immunosuppressive Therapy for the Prevention of Restenosis after Coronary Artery Stent Implantation (IMPRESS) study identified 83 patients undergoing successful stenting with CRP levels > 0.5 mg/dL 72 hours after stent placement.
They were randomly assigned to prednisone or placebo. The steroid protocol was 1 mg/kg for the first 10 days, tapered to 0. 5 mg/kg for days 11-30 and then 0.25 mg/kg through day 45.
