Cervical transepithelial sampling with a stiff-bristled spiral brush appears to be as good as standard punch biopsy for detecting cervical pathology, according to a study described in the December issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In this study, the brush biopsy resulted in substantially less pain and bleeding than did the traditional sampling method. “The SpiraBrush CX is designed to go deep into the cell layers,” Dr. Stewart A. Lonky, medical director of The Trylon Corporation in Torrance, California, told Reuters Health. “It allows the doctor to immediately sample abnormalities seen on the cervix, painlessly and bloodlessly, to get information as quickly and reliably as possible,” rather than having to reschedule patients for a more invasive procedure.
