Beta-blockers used for the treatment of glaucoma are associated with an increased risk of airways obstruction, according to a U.K. population-based cohort study reported in the Dec. 14 issue of the British Medical Journal. The investigators warn that these drugs should be stopped if the patient develops obstructive symptoms.
“Topical beta-blockers are the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United Kingdom for glaucoma,” write James F. Kirwan, from the Institute of Ophthalmology in London, U.K., and colleagues. “This finding raises an issue of public health importance because of the large number (approximately 500,000) of elderly patients in the United Kingdom who are treated for glaucoma and ocular hypertension.”
