Although the use of episiotomy in the US has decreased significantly since 1979, the rate in 1997 was still higher than 35%, according to results of a study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. In contrast, reports from individual institutions indicate that rates of 10% or lower can be achieved while still achieving good maternal and neonatal outcomes.
In the December issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Anne M. Weber and Leslie Meyn describe their analysis of data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey between 1979 and 1997. During that period, more than 54 million women delivered singleton infants.
