Redo Surgery Versus Angiogplasty/Stenting In Early Carotid Restenosis

Balloon angioplasty/stenting (BA/S) and redo surgery have comparable stroke and death rates in the treatment of early carotid restenosis, researchers in the United States have found. Redo surgery, however, is linked with transient cranial nerve injuries, while stent patients have a higher incidence of recurrent lesions, reports this study from Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University, Charleston, West Virginia and the Bureau of Primary Health Care/HRSA/DHHS, Bethesda, Maryland.

Doctors need to be alert to these considerations when selecting the appropriate treatment for patients with early post-surgical restenosis, Dr Ali F. AbuRahma and colleagues underline. Participants in this study were 35 women and 26 men a mean of 69 years of age with early restenosis (<24 months from primary endarterectomy) in 63 carotid arteries treated over a five-year period.
