Physicians should only conduct e-mail consultations if they have previously established a relationship with a patient, according to new guidelines announced on Wednesday.
A consortium of national medical societies and malpractice carriers, known as the eRisk Working Group for Healthcare, developed the guidelines to limit the liability risks of communicating via e-mail. State medical licensing boards also participated in the development of the guidelines.
