An aggressive public education program by the federal government and private agencies is beginning to boost the number of organ donations, but more effort is needed to meet the demand, an official with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) told attendees at a conference on organ transplantation last week.
HHS Deputy Secretary Claude A. Allen said the need for organ donors remains “urgent” because 80,000 people are on a waiting list to receive an organ for transplant at any given time. Of that total, 6,000 die each year waiting for an organ to become available, he said.
