During the first 8 hours after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), measurement of creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) mass is a useful method of ruling out perioperative myocardial infarction (poMI), according to researchers in the Netherlands.
“In many studies, the emphasis of the diagnostic properties of biochemical markers has been on the detection rather than the ruling out of poMI,” Dr. Erik J. Fransen, of University Hospital Maastricht, and colleagues note in the October issue of Chest. “However, postoperative treatment of cardiac surgical patients could be improved [if] poMI could be ruled out as early as possible after surgery.”
