The bone anchors that are used for certain types of bladder neck surgery can lead to pubic osteomyelitis, according to a report published in the November issue of The Journal of Urology.
Most evidence suggests that bone anchor fixation of sutures–to reduce suture pull-through–is safe, study author Dr. Christopher W. Graham and Dr. Roger R. Dmochowski, from the North Texas Center for Urinary Control in Fort Worth, note. However, there have been a few case reports describing osteomyelitis in patients who have received bone anchors during bladder neck surgery.
