Conceptus Inc.’s Essure, a device that works something like an IUD but sterilizes a woman, has been cleared for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA said on Monday it had cleared the system — which uses a tiny group of coils to sterilize a woman without surgery — after an expedited review. “It’s different from other things used for sterilization because it does not require an incision or general anesthesia,” an FDA spokeswoman said.
