An investigational formulation of ciprofloxacin that can be dosed once a day appears to be as effective as twice a day dosing in treating urinary tract infections.
In a poster presentation at the 40th annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, D.C. Henry, MD, of the Foothill Family Clinic, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, said, “Data from this study showed that the extended release formulation of once-daily ciprofloxacin suggested long-term efficacy out to 50 days post-treatment and was comparable to twice-daily ciprofloxacin over a three-day course of therapy for uncomplicated urinary tract infections.”
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections account for about 8 million doctors’ office visits a year in the United States, he said. His study was sponsored by Bayer Corp., Leverkusen, Germany.
