The angiotensin-II receptor blocker telmisartan reduces blood pressure comparably to hydrochlorothiazide, but also reduced albuminuria, European researchers said here November 1 at the 35th annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).
Albuminuria is associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease and is a predictor of cardiovascular death, according to researchers led by Liffert Vogt, MD, of the Groningen University Institute for Drug Exploration, in Groningen, the Netherlands. As well, high systolic blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and for renal failure.
