The federal government is expected to release its final security rule on Dec. 27, 2002, but doctors, hospitals, health plans and other “covered entities” obligated to comply with it should not wait until then to begin developing their policies to protect medical information, according to officials familiar with the rule-making process.
The timing of the final security rule, part of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) has been the subject of widespread industry speculation for months. The rule establishes the standards and procedures that covered entities must take to protect and limit access to patients’ healthcare information.
