Lifetime panic symptoms in patients with bipolar I (BPI) disorder are linked with greater levels of depression, more thoughts of suicide and a marked delay in recovery after acute treatment.
These are the findings of a joint United States-Italy study of the clinical significance of what these researchers call lifetime “panic spectrum” symptoms in the treatment of BPI patients. Dr Ellen Frank and colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Pisa, Pisa, were prompted to do the study by the observed relationship between panic disorder and bipolar disorder and the potential negative influence of panic symptoms on the course of the latter.
