A new report provides the first solid evidence that oxidative protein modifications cause the drusen formation that leads to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the major cause of untreatable vision loss in developed countries.
“The retinal environment is ideal for photo-oxidative damage, because of exposure to light and oxygen and because it is rich in docosahexaenoic acid, the most oxidizable fatty acid in humans,” lead author Dr. John W. Crabb, of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, told Reuters Health.
