An Australian study indicates that multifocal glasses reduce depth perception and edge-contrast sensitivity, impairing the ability to detect obstacles and increasing the risk of falling among older individuals.
Based on their findings, Dr. Stephen Lord and associates of the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute in Randwick recommend that older persons wear single-lens glasses when walking, especially on stairs and in unfamiliar settings outside the home.
