Prevention may be the best approach to anxiety disorders in at-risk children, said Dr. Dina R. Hirshfield-Becker, here at the 49th annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
“We developed a cognitive behavioral therapy to use in children 4 to 7 years old, as well as their parents,” she told Reuters Health. “We hoped to develop an intervention that will help prevent anxiety disorders from developing in children at risk for them, and the findings of our pilot study were promising.” Dr. Hirshfield-Becker is the director of auxiliary services in the pediatric psychopharmacology program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
