Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) appear to provide additional cardioprotection in coronary heart disease patients taking low-dose aspirin, according to new research.
Dr. Marie Hudson, with the Division of Rheumatology at McGill University Health Center, Montreal, Canada, and colleagues presented their findings at the American College of Rheumatology 66th annual meeting here.
“Our initial hypothesis was that NSAIDs could interfere with the effect of aspirin, and that patients taking both would be at increased risk of recurrent acute myocardial infarction,” Dr. Hudson told Reuters Health. “But our overall data is reassuring, especially for sporadic [NSAID] users.”
