Atopic Dermatitis Children May React To First Ingestion Of Egg

Young children with atopic dermatitis may react the first time they eat egg, indicating a challenge should be performed in a protected environment.

Italian researchers suggest a hospital be used after they observed a positive egg challenge in 67.3 percent of atopic dermatitis children. This included children with mild as well as moderate to severe disease. Results indicate a 5 millimetre or greater diameter in a skin prick test for albumen and yolk and a specific immunoglobin E for albumen higher than 99 KU/L and for yolk equal to or higher than 17.5 KU/L were 100 percent specific in predicting outcome to the challenge in atopic dermatitis children.

“Children with atopic dermatitis whose skin prick test and/or radioallergosorbent (RAST) for albumen and/or yolk are equal to or higher than these cutoff values should not be subjected to the oral challenge when consideration is given to the introduction of egg to their diet,” explain investigators from the Universita di Torino in Torino.
