Early use of aspirin after coronary bypass surgery is safe and linked with reduced risk of
death and ischemic complications involving the heart, brain, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract.
These are the provocative findings of the Multicentre Study of Perioperative Ischemic Research Group led by Dr Dennis T Mangano from the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation, San Francisco, California, United States.
Surgical revascularisation of the coronary arteries is done annually in nearly one million patients. However, complication rates continue to be troubling, and to date no therapy is known to reduce the risk of complications or death following the procedure, these
researchers note.
