Although many family physicians have sought a one-year extension to comply with the electronic transaction rule under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a wide range of questions remain about how the sweeping federal law will be implemented and enforced. In two educational sessions and a town hall meeting at the American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP) Annual Scientific Assembly here, hundreds of family doctors expressed their concerns about the additional time and financial resources that complying with HIPAA is likely to require.
Key questions centered on how to upgrade billing systems to handle electronic claims transmissions, how to develop and implement a sound patient privacy policy, and what steps to take to ensure that a practice’s business associates comply with law’s privacy provisions.
