According to a report from the British Cardiac Society and the Royal College of Physicians, Britain has one of the highest coronary heart disease rates in the world, yet the provision of care for patients remains poor.
Furthermore cardiac services face severe shortages of cardiologists, surgeons, cardiac nurses, technicians and support staff. The report also states that there is a danger that the existing emphasis on treating coronary heart disease is having a detrimental effect on services for other conditions, such as cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias and congenital heart disease.
