NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 11 –
Repetitive strengthening exercises are of questionable benefit for patients with hemiplegia or hemiparesis due to stroke, according to a professor of neurology and a professor of physical therapy at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. William M. Landau and Dr. Shirley A. Sahrmann have found that, contrary to conventional wisdom and data from several histologic studies, the contractile capacity of hemiparetic muscle in stroke patients is not significantly different from that of unaffected muscle. Their report appears in the September issue of Archives of Neurology.
